Moisturizer for Oily Skin?

Posted by Leanne Lee on Sep 2nd 2021

A common misconception for those who have oily skin is that they do not need moisturizer. But even oily skin types need added hydration and moisture. One complaint that I hear often is, “It feels heavy/greasy on my skin.” It is important to choose the correct moisturizer for oily skin.

Even though this skin type is not oil-dry it can still be water-dry, meaning it can be dehydrated and lack water content. For this reason, it is important to select a moisturizer that has ingredients that hydrate the skin and bind water to the skin. Heavy emollients are not needed; look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid which holds 1000 times its weight in water. An oil-free hydrating lotion will absorb completely into the skin and will not feel greasy or heavy.

The reason for using a moisturizer is two-fold. Moisturizer acts as a barrier and protectant between your skin and the dirt and pollutants in the air. Another reason to use a hydrating lotion is that it can reduce the amount of oil that you skin produces. As stated above, oily skin often dehydrated in response to the dehydration in the skin, the skin produces more oil to counteract further water loss. By replacing the water loss in the skin with a hydrating serum or lotion, the skin will be less reactive and begin to lessen oil production.

Many times, it may take one to two weeks after introducing a moisturizer for the skin to normalize. If the skin is still oily after using the product for two weeks, an oil-free hydrator with oil absorbers may be a better fit. Oil absorbers absorb excess oil, as well as hydrate the skin. Here are few product recommendations for Oily Skin. Jane Iredale’s BeautyPrep Hyaluronic Serum. It is a lightweight, non-greasy hyaluronic serum. If you need more oil-control, try Jane Iredale’s Oily Skin Face Primer. It doubles as a moisturizer and provides oil control properties. For day-time use, be sure your moisturizer has an SPF to protect your skin from damage and prevent premature aging. I recommend Jane Iredale’s PurePressed Base to Finish your skincare routine. It is a foundation, powder, concealer, and broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen all-in-one. It is more matte than loose powders and is free of synthetic chemicals; oil free and weightless; contains antioxidants such as pine bark extract and pomegranate extract; contains algae extracts, soothing for sensitive skin and is water resistant to 40 minutes.
